This study-unit is intended for commercial drone pilots and operators who have already completed basic theoretical and practical UAV training, and who want to learn about advanced UAV technology and operations. The study unit includes the following topics:

Advanced, civilian UAV applications (including cargo delivery, BVLOS operations, etc.)
Advanced sensors and systems
Principles of drone photogrammetry
Drone programming and simulation
CONOPS development and safety analysis
Flight operations
Security
Drone design
Drone assembly and maintenance

Students will first complete a series of theoretical modules before moving on to practical (flight) training.

Study-unit Aims

To discuss advanced civilian UAV applications and operations, and their safety and security implications
To provide an in-depth understanding of the science, technology and engineering aspects of advanced UAV operations
To provide hands-on experience with advanced drones, mission payloads and software

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Describe advanced UAV applications
Explain the technology behind advanced UAV sensors and systems
Describe the underlying scientific principles of drone photogrammetry
Identify operational safety and security risks associated with advanced UAV applications, and explain how they can be mitigated
Discuss fundamental UAV design, assembly and maintenance principles

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Select the most suitable UAV and sensor payload for a particular mission
Develop a CONOPS for an advanced UAV application
Perform a risk assessment
Assemble and fly advanced drones with different payloads and automation modes, in a variety of missions
Demonstrate proficiency in the use of mission planning software and drone mapping software
Demonstrate proficiency in drone programming
Apply appropriate UAV maintenance procedures
